Germany and Hungary after the federal election – what’s next?

March 18, 2025

Dr. Péter Györkös, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary to the Federal Republic of Germany

Author: HSH Vitéz Prinz Philipp Ernst zu Hohenlohe-Langenburg, Graf von Gleichen

On March 13, 2025, the Staff Captain of Germany, Prince Philipp Ernst of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, visited the Hungarian Embassy in Berlin. There, the participants discussed German-Hungarian relations with Hungary’s Ambassador, His Excellency Dr. Péter Györkös. The event was organized by the German-Hungarian Society in the Federal Republic of Germany under the leadership of its President, Dr. Gerhard Papke.

The meeting opened with a lecture entitled “Perspectives for German-Hungarian Relations” by Dr. Péter Györkös, Ambassador of Hungary. He addressed the emerging political changes following the election of the US President and the election of the Bundestag of the Federal Republic of Germany., With his initiative to end the war in Ukraine, US President Trump over the heads of Europeans, has exposed the powerlessness of the European Union. The new American administration will foreseeably pose the greatest challenges to European political, economic, and military cooperation since the end of the Cold War. The new federal government to be elected in Germany will also have to adapt to the new demands of global change.

The ambassador reported on Hungary’s initiatives to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. Hungarian President Viktor Orbán used his election as President of the European Council on July 1, 2024, and thus as the official representative of the European Union, to hold intensive discussions with both the Russian side and with representatives of Ukraine and the United States.

What role can German-Hungarian cooperation play in the necessary reorganization of the European Union, and above all, what can Germans and Hungarians expect from a new federal government for relations between the two countries? These topics were discussed with the ambassador following the lecture.

The very interesting event concluded with further private discussions over a meal of delicious Hungarian dishes.
