The Remains of an Unknown Hungarian Honvéd (soldier) Exhumed in Balkány, Kenderes Farmstead

November 28, 2024

Author: Vitéz Zoltán József Molnár

Based on a report by vitéz Zoltán József Molnár, the Seat Captain of Northeast Hungary Region of the Order of Vitéz, the remains of a World War II Hungarian honvéd (soldier) were exhumed on 17 October 2024 at the Kenderes farmstead in Balkány, Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County. The exhumation was carried out by personnel from the Military History Institute and Museum and the 5th Supplementary and Recruitment Office of the Hungarian Defence Forces Military and Central Registry Command. The identity of the honvéd could not be established. During preliminary research conducted by vitéz Zoltán József Molnár in the southern rural area of Balkány, the identities of two fallen honvéds were uncovered. One of these might match the identity of the exhumed honvéd, who was buried without a grave marker. However, records from death registries and oral histories from elderly residents of the local community reference two different honvéds. This raises the possibility that there may be two distinct wartime graves in close proximity. Consequently, further local historical research is necessary.

Glory to the heroes!
