This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, one of the most significant events in modern Hungarian history and a powerful symbol of the struggle for freedom, national dignity, and independence.
Osijek holds a special place in the memory of these historic events, as the city provided refuge to Hungarian refugees following the suppression of the revolution. The solidarity and humanity demonstrated by the citizens of Osijek remain a lasting symbol of the friendship between the Croatian and Hungarian peoples.
As part of the commemorative events, a delegation of the Order of Vitéz, together with Staff Captain of Tengermellék and Croatia Region, Count Mario Festetics de Tolna, participated in the wreath-laying ceremony, paying tribute to the participants of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and to all those who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of their nation.
The participation of the Order of Vitéz delegation in this commemoration underscores the importance of preserving historical heritage, upholding tradition, and honouring those who fought for freedom. The wreath-laying ceremony served as an expression of profound respect for the victims of the revolution and reaffirmed the historical and cultural ties between Croatia and Hungary.
Commemorating this anniversary in Osijek is not merely an act of remembrance; it is also a message to future generations about the enduring importance of freedom, dignity, mutual respect, and solidarity among nations.
