Saturday, June 26 was the church day at the Hungarian Protestant church of North Rhine-Westphalia. The program began with a musical worship at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cologne. Because of the strict epidemiological rules, only 70 people were allowed to attend the ceremony this year. In Germany, all Protestant churches are in one congregation, so the Calvinist pastor Márta Gulyás is responsible for the spiritual care of all members of the reformed churches from Hungary. The pastor performs this task with great patience, as it is not easy to manage Reformed, Lutheran, or Unitarian believers at the same time. The musical background of the service was undertaken by the German staff captain of the Order of Vitéz, vitéz Gábor von Hegyi (trumpet), and Edit Mustos (organ), the cantor of the Hungarian Catholic Church. It was good to see that the congregation is growing even tin the pandemic, worship, but also a baptism and confirmation. After the lunch break Dr. Hanna Hittner Consul of Hungary gave a short presentation and answered current questions about Hungary, travel conditions, and vaccinations and holyday options in Hungary. After a smart conversation was the blessing of the congregation at four in the afternoon.

A delegation of the Order Vitéz visited the tomb of St. Elizabeth of Árpád House on Saturday, June 12. The Hungarian princess has a very great cult in Germany to this day, as she is the patron saint of Thuringia and Hesse. At his grave we commemorated her not only with a wreath but also with a bouquet of roses, because Elizabeth is usually depicted with roses. According to the legend one day the princess was just bringing bread to the poor when her brother-in-law, Count Henrik of Thuringia, questioned her and wanted to see what she was hiding in her apron. Elisabeth was frightened by her brother-in-law’s ore wrath and replied: roses. God did not want Elizabeth to be lied to, so to the wonder of miracles, when Henrik looked at his apron with force, he really only saw fragrant roses.

The Order of Vitéz believes in religion, nation and family as the most important core values. We consider it important to preserve our national self-consciousness, which is why we pay special attention to visiting and nurturing Hungarian-related memorial sites on all five continents where the members of our Order live. It has been two years since the memorial plaque of Cardinal Mindszenty’s visit to Cologne was inaugurated in the crypt of the cathedral. On the anniversary of his death this year, May 6, we prayed together for the beatify of our last prince-primate. Due to strict epidemiological regulations, the management of the cathedral allowed the presence of 20 people at the commemoration. The program began with reverence in the Chapel of Our Lady, which was celebrated by the parish priest József Lukács. It was a special experience to admire the altar of the chapel, made in 1442 by the Gothic painter Stephan Lochner of Cologne. The three-winged altarpiece depicting the angelic greeting simply fascinates one especially now that there was silence in the temple as well, as visiting is forbidden during the pandemic.

After the prayers, we were able to hear the ceremonial speech of Consul General Dr. Hanna Hittner and Ingbert Mühe. After the speeches, the Hungarian Roman Catholic Ministry of the Archdiocese of Cologne, the Consulate General of Hungary in Düsseldorf, and the Order of Vitéz placed a wreath in the crypt. After that, we had the honor of taking a group photo in front of the artistically decorated relic holder of the Three Kings. The world’s largest gold cabinet was made by goldsmith Nikolaus von Verdunt for nearly 40 years. For 850 years now, the bones rest here that we honor as remnants of the wise men of the East.
