Memorial mass of our last king in the Matthias Church

January 4, 2024

Photo: Wikipedia

On December 30, 1916, in the Coronation Cathedral of Buda, Charles IV, the then Austrian Emperor and Hungarian King, was ceremoniously crowned, which temporarily distracted the focus from the horrors of World War I. In the days leading up to the event, an unknown perpetrator nearly cut the wires holding the heavy chandeliers above the place of the coronation ceremony, but thanks to the actions of mechanical engineer László Bánó, a tragedy was averted. The coronation proceeded smoothly, and in the history of Hungarian coronations it was the first time the Hungarian national anthem was heard instead of the imperial anthem.

107 years later, on December 30, 2023, many gathered for the memorial mass of Blessed Charles IV, initiated by Vitéz Ádám Berniczei-Roykó, the Deputy Captain General of the Order of Vitéz, and his wife Ágnes for the purpose of establishing a tradition. The Latin mass was celebrated by priests László Süllei and Vitéz Zsolt Szerencsés, with the participation of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Among the attendees were private individuals such as György Bakondi, the Prime Minister’s chief security advisor, along with numerous members and officials of the Order of Vitéz. Besides Captain General Josef Karl von Habsburg-Lothringen, the organizers included Vitéz Marquise Zita Pallavicini, Vitéz Countess Margit Batthyány-Schmidt, Vitéz Lóránd Baron Riedel, Vitéz László Kóczy, and Vitéz Imre Vejkey staff captains. Represented were the Hungarian Parliamentary Prayer Group Foundation, the Otto von Habsburg Foundation, the Hungarian Paneuropean Union, the Hungarian Batthyány Foundation, the Andrássy Salon Foundation, and the Hungarian Association of Historical Families.

Countess Pallavicini Zita stated: “In today’s challenging world, when we live in uncertain times, strength can be drawn from the exemplary life of Charles IV. He was courageous, and despite facing a difficult political situation, his faith, perseverance, love, and his marvellous marriage to Zita of Bourbon-Parma… these can definitely provide strength even today. Past role models offer hope.”

Charles IV sought to end World War I through a peace treaty and prohibited attacks against civilians. He generously contributed to the welfare of the poor from his own wealth and established the world’s first social ministry. In exile, he faced life’s challenges with his wife and children, praying for unity before his death.

From now on, every December 30th, we can remember him during the festive masses at Matthias Church.

An excellent article was published in Magyar Nemzet, entitled “Utolsó királyunk emlékmiséje a Mátyás-templomban” from the pen of our Historian Staff Captain Vitéz Attila Bánó de Kükemeze et Tapolylucska. The article can be viewed at the following link:

Christmas Greetings

December 19, 2023

On behalf of Our Captain General, the seat of Vitéz and officer corps, we wish a Blessed Advent, the Grace of the Christmas Mystery, and a Happy New Year to all our fellow members and friends with the words of our Spiritual Staff Captain.

Dr. Imre Vejkey, Spiritual Staff Captain of the Order of Vitéz, sends his Christmas greetings in the form of the following letter:

Dear Nemzetes Ladies and Gentlemen,

I wish you a Christmas rich in grace and blessings!

May our Lord Jesus Christ set our hearts ablaze as we approach Advent of 2023 with joyful anticipation and hope!

May the Lord grant that as we adorn our homes with Christmas decorations, we also decorate our hearts! Let us adorn them for His coming!

May the Lord ensure that for us, the holiday does not signify an escape from responsibility into irresponsibility, but rather that it becomes a capital-letter CELEBRATION, a day of gratitude and sanctification!

Remember that the Celebration, including the lighting of Advent candles, offers us the opportunity for our entire lives to return to the light, to return to brightness!

Remember, the key to opening our soul’s window upward is faith! The key to being able to receive His gifts!

Remember that at the centre of the celebration should stand the one being celebrated, Jesus Christ at Christmas!

And finally, do not forget that the main role does not belong to material gift-giving but to spiritual giving, and our gift directly from the Father is the Little Baby Jesus, through whom we receive God’s love! Therefore, Christmas is the celebration of Divine love of God!

Let us rejoice that this celebration is approaching!

Let us rejoice and be grateful for it!

Let us rejoice, seeking community with Him, for then we can better rejoice with each other and enter into deeper fellowship with one another!

Finally, allow me to wish You a Blessed Christmas with the poem I wrote for this year’s Advent!

20-ADVENT-23
YOUR Witness, My Lord

An angelic song in the early night,
And the light of Advent already draws my being,
I feel the appeal of my heart too:
I am your witness, Lord!

I witness that there was a night,
I witness that there was no shelter but there was bread,
I witness that there was the “House of Bread,”
I witness that YOU entered into the great world!

I witness that the star appeared,
I witness that YOU are more reassuring than this light,
I witness that all this is not a tale,
I witness that YOU are His love!

I witness that everything is Yours,
I witness that this should be acknowledged,
I witness that this is the moment,
I witness that sin is already halted!

I witness that mercy is here,
I witness that there is no other refuge,
I witness that all this is not just religious knowledge,
But more, because I live here with You!

The Vitéz oath and slander

December 7, 2023

The Staff Captain, Judge of the Seat of Order of Vitéz, Prof. Dr. Vitéz Nob. László T. Kóczy de Borgó et Nagysikárló on December 2, 2023, he expressed his thoughts on a startling case:

On June 2, 2023, during the session of the Seat of Vitéz in Stockholm, a resolution was approved, necessitated by the fact that there were confreres, who rejecting the spirit of camaraderie, made unfounded and derogatory statements about each other.

“Those, who are unsatisfied with their own order roles and positions, […] have become supporters of associations and organizations calling themselves ‘Vitézi Rend’, have collaborated with unrecognized ‘knightly orders’ and with pagan organizations mocking Christianity.” – he wrote.

The resolution of the Seat is as follows: “Anyone who, as an invested vitéz, uses any form of offensive, derogatory, negative, unfounded criticism against their comrade, or makes expressions, that endangers the unity of the Order, shall be relieved of their vitéz oath with immediate effect, and their name shall be removed from the registry.”

This resolution hopefully prompts those who have expressed criticism or slander against a fellow confrere in the past to reflect on their expressions and take actions to ensure that the wounds caused heal as quickly as possible.

The old Hungarian–Turkish friendship before the honfoglalás was expressed by several Turkish participants, among them Consul General Dr. H. Emre Uygung (in the picture above, on the left).

In memory of the 1956 uprising, the Hungarian Embassy in Bern organized a wonderful event where I was able to represent the Order of Vitéz again. I had the possibility to introduce the Order to many diplomats and politicians. (In the picture above, Pál Zsigmond Barna gives a speech)
